While it is widely believed that obesity is the biggest health concern in the United States, a new study released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that more people in the United States are dying because of hepatitis C. The study mentioned that the deaths associated with hepatitis C in the year 2014 have escalated to 19, 659 which is an all-time high mark. The study confirms that most of the people who have died due to hepatitis C were not informed or aware of the disease. Secondly, hepatitis C has few noticeable symptoms and therefore not many people got screened in time.
According to the study majority of the people dying due to this curable disease are born from 1945 to 1965 and were affected by the medical procedures in the years of World War II. The study believes that injection and blood transfusion methods were unsafe then and without proper diagnosis and treatment these people suffered and lived with infection for all these years. The data also reveals that people who injected drugs constitute a major chunk of the people who died due to hepatitis C infection. The data reveals that currently 3.5 million Americans are affected with hepatitis C and around 50% of the infected population is unaware of their infection. CDC along with local community support is now spreading awareness about how to stop and reduce the number of deaths by hepatitis C.
